Beware the Plastics Haunting Your Beauty Products

I can’t wait for Halloween. It’s a festive holiday, a fun way to involve the kids, and a great opportunity to talk about one of the demons that plague our industry.

I’m talking about plastic. In the personal care space, the unnecessary use of plastic is shockingly prevalent. This October, let’s solve the mystery of why that is—and make it a thing of the past.

Does the Beauty Industry Need a Plastic Exorcism?

We’ve all bought personal care products that looked good, only to realize they included a ton of plastic packaging. Greenwashing is real, and even brands that promise to protect the environment may struggle to keep their materials sustainable.

Studies show that only 14% of beauty product packaging reaches a recycling plant—and just 9% of containers are actually recycled. The rest of these single-use plastics end up in a landfill. From where I’m standing, that isn’t a good look. In fact, I find it slightly terrifying.

But the problem goes deeper than packaging. Plastic leaves behind an unwelcome ghostly trail in some of the products we use. It’s sometimes used in product formulations, like microbeads in facial scrubs, which act as exfoliating agents.

This synthetic material is everywhere, and its presence can be sinister—degrading the environment and infiltrating ecosystems in ways we can’t easily reverse.

But as awareness grows, so does the call for change. The personal care industry needs a plastic exorcism, and it needs one fast. The prevalence of plastic in our industry is not just unnecessary—it’s harmful.

The Environmental Impact of Plastic

Plastic is ominous, and microplastics are even spookier. These tiny particles are especially concerning because they slip past water treatment systems and end up in our oceans, where they harm marine life and infiltrate the food chain.

It’s a scary thought that the products we use to care for ourselves might actually be contributing to such widespread environmental damage. Yet single-use plastics are the main source of plastic pollution in the world today. Americans alone toss more than 30 million tons of plastic each year. This is shocking—and not in a good way.

What makes plastics particularly concerning is their stubborn resistance to breaking down—and their tendency to absorb harmful pollutants. Once they’re in the environment, they can accumulate toxic substances that make them even more dangerous. Their persistence means they can cause nearly irreversible damage (like when they’re ingested by plankton, for example). This proves just how critical it is for the personal care industry to adopt more sustainable practices. By focusing on solutions that protect the planet, we can help reduce the environmental footprint of our beauty routines—and make the situation a little less scary this Halloween.

PCR Plastic: The Friendly Ghost in Beauty Care

Recycle Your Empties with PACT Collective

What if I told you there was a friendly ghost in our industry—like Casper?

Not all plastics are created equal. At Sky Organics, when we do use plastic bottles and jars, we make sure they’re made from fully recycled—and recyclable—plastic. This environmentally-conscious, post-consumer recycled plastic is better for the planet.

This is important to us because ecofriendly packaging means everything to our team. From sugar cane and compostable paper to sustainable glass bottles, we care deeply about the packaging we use. Truly, it’s never an afterthought. And PCR plastic is just the beginning.

Are you ready to recycle your empty personal care containers?

At Sky Organics, we’ve made it easy for you to do exactly that—right down to those tricky product components like pumps and droppers.

Through our partnership with Pact Collective, you can mail in up to 10 approved items for proper recycling. Our team will even cover your recycling costs—and you’ll get a $5 discount on your next purchase to offset the shipping fee.

It’s a simple way to give your beauty waste a second life and protect the planet in the process.

Because the plastic spirits won’t rest until we do something about them. This October, I challenge you to avoid single-use plastics and fill your medicine cabinets with pure and potent products sourced from nature. I urge you to toss those single-use plastics into the graveyard of your life, and instead, opt for sustainable, recyclable packaging and USDA Organic Certification whenever possible.

Will you join me in doing so this Halloween? Sky Organics would love to help you make it happen.
