Lips need love just the same way you make sure to care for your face, body, hair, and nails. That's why we're busting some common lip care myths - so you can give treat your lips the way they deserve and help them keep healthy and soft!
Lips don’t need sunscreen
People don’t think lips can burn, but that’s false! Lips not only receive the same amount of UV rays as the rest of the face, but they have less protection due to having a much thinner top layer of skin. Using lip products with sunscreen is vital for healthy lip care!
Lip care makes lips dry out faster
The idea that lip balms dry out lips faster stems from the fact that people find themselves having to use their balms over and over again, but this tends to be a result of harsh ingredients like parabens and alcohol used in balms which can irritate skin and require lips to be soothed more often.
Unlike most of our body, lips contain zero sebaceous glands which are responsible for producing oil that help moisturize and protect skin. It’s only natural then that lips would have a tendency to dry out and would need more frequent care.
Lipstick can replace lip balms
While lipsticks help to form a protective covering over lips, they lack the vitamins and antioxidants to restore and rehydrate lips the way balms can.
That’s why we always make sure to prep lips by applying a balm as a starting base before applying lipstick! It’s sort of the equivalent of applying primer before makeup. And the good news is if you want something that can do both – hydrate lips and give you a pop of color – our Tinted Lip Balms have got you covered.
Lip care is addicting
Even if you have a lip balm in your car, one at work, one at home, and one that you keep in your purse while you’re running errands, that’s not addiction – that’s just being resourceful and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!
The truth is, there is no evidence to support that lip balms can be addicting – mainly because cosmetic products often need to be extensively vetted before being sold and don’t contain potentially addictive ingredients in them.
All lip balms are the same
Though all lip balms may feel the same when applied – they’re aren’t made equally. Many lip balms contain harsh ingredients like phenol. While alcohol-based ingredients can provide lips a cooling sensation, over time it can irritate skin and even strip away the thin layer of protection we have.
When buying lip balms it’s important to search for balms made using plant-based ingredients, and free of things like parabens and fragrances. Our Organic Beeswax Lip Balms are USDA certified organic and made using only natural ingredients like conditioning beeswax, moisturizing coconut oil, and soothing vitamin E, so can lips feeling soft and nourished! 👌
