Celebrate World Oceans Day with Sky Organics
Growing up near the water, I’ve always felt connected to the ocean. This is part of why I plan to celebrate World Oceans Day this weekend—to show my appreciation and contribute to a cause that is close to my heart. June 8 is a special occasion, and personally, I look forward to honoring our precious waters.
About World Oceans Day
There’s something meditative about waves crashing on a pristine beach. And it’s no wonder—because water is the source of all life. Our oceans cover 70% of the world’s surface and produce over 50% of the planet’s oxygen. There are 8 billion people living on Earth today, and none of us could survive without these bodies of water.
The world’s oceans also offer economic benefits. According to the United Nations (UN), about 40 million people will be employed in marine-based industries by 2030. And these waters have a serious impact on tourism too. There’s a reason sandy beaches are such popular travel destinations.
But let’s dive deeper here. We can’t just sit back and hope our oceans take care of themselves. Sanctioned by the UN, World Oceans Day not only honors the sea, but highlights the need for marine restoration.
It underscores the idea that together, we can preserve the ocean’s reefs and protect the underwater ecosystems that depend on our respect. A big part of this involves choosing brands that pledge to protect the planet.
The Depths of Marine Health
Now more than ever, we need to support our underwater ecosystems—because they’re very much at risk. Approximately 90% of big fish populations are depleted, and half of the world’s coral reefs have been destroyed.
Plastic waste plays a huge role in the precarious state of our waters. The material represents 80% of all marine pollution, and each year, up to 10 million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean. Researchers also claim that if we don’t act quickly, underwater plastic could outweigh all of the fish in the sea by 2050.
We can’t let this happen. While we can certainly take action by reducing our use of plastic (and by encouraging consumers to recycle), ocean pollution goes further than poor packaging decisions. The following ingredients are damaging to coral and marine life too:
Parabens
Used in certain skincare products as preservatives, parabens are known to harm coral reefs, dolphins, and marine mammals like otters.
Triclosan
Triclosan is used in soaps, lotions, and some makeup as an antibacterial agent. Although it kills microbes, researchers also claim it can keep blue-green algae—a key factor in coral health—from growing.
Octinoxate and oxybenzone
These sunscreen ingredients may seem harmless, but research reveals the opposite. Some communities, states, and even countries have banned the use of these ingredients, as they’ve been shown to damage coral reefs.
Artificial fragrances
Many artificial fragrances contain chemicals that prevent aquatic animals from properly clearing toxins.
At Sky Organics, we take pride in our certified organic ingredients, sustainable packaging materials, and eco-friendly practices. We want to show our oceans we care by offering the purest, most potent personal care products around.
Restoring Our Oceans Through Certifiably-Better Beauty
As a proud certified B Corporation, Sky Organics champions water-friendly beauty, ensuring that our products not only enhance your well-being but also help to protect the delicate balance of our aquatic ecosystems. Sustainability is a core part of our mission, and this certification shows that we actually practice what we preach.
After all, our simple ingredient lists are pure and purposeful. Some products, like our Organic Castor Oil, contain just one ingredient. And we always aim for USDA Organic Certification when possible.
Because here’s the thing—certified organic is the purest form of natural. It’s also better for the Earth, since products with this designation are grown, harvested, and processed without synthetic chemicals.
These are important considerations. They also highlight the fact that we genuinely value our aquatic ecosystems. Social responsibility means a lot to us, and we strive to do our part by offering ocean-centric beauty care. Partners like Yuka, which posts health impact ratings for all our products, hold us accountable.
FROM A PACKAGING STANDPOINT:
• Almost half of our products are sold in sustainable glass bottles.
•Our plastic bottles and jars are made from 100% recycled material.
• We offer a mail-back recycling partnership through Pact Collective for any packaging that isn’t commonly accepted in curbside recycling programs.
These are just some of the ways Sky Organics is working to protect our waters this World Oceans Day. Future generations—including my young daughter and her peers—deserve better. And so do the coral reefs and marine life that depend on the good of humanity to survive.
