Eco-Friendly Decorating for a Sustainable Holiday
The holidays have always been a special time for my family. Decorating the home—and spending time together—mean a lot to me. But more recently, becoming a parent has made me really think about the world we’re leaving our children. This includes the impact our holiday traditions can have on the environment.
I’ve long cared about sustainability, but having kids has really put the issue of waste into perspective.
Every piece of plastic, every disposable decoration, every strand of lights that burns out and gets tossed—they all add up. And according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the amount of household waste increases by a shocking 25% between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, from 4 million tons to 5 million tons.
That’s when it really hit me: we can’t go on like this. After all, the choices we make now will shape the world our kids grow up in.
This is why I’ve decided to focus only on sustainable ways to celebrate the holidays this year. I hope you’ll join me and the Sky Organics Team in making ecofriendly décor a top priority this year. I firmly believe we can take in all the beauty and joy of the holidays without compromising our planet’s future.
By making small, thoughtful changes, we can reduce waste and show our kids what it means to care for the earth—while still creating memories they’ll cherish. Here are some of the decorating tips I plan to
follow this holiday season.
Upcycle Your Decor
Rather than buying new things, I always start by looking at the decor we already have. It’s a fun family tradition to get creative and upcycle old ornaments or wreaths—adding a fresh coat of paint or some natural embellishments. This reduces waste and teaches my daughter the value of reusing what we have
Use Energy-Efficient LED Lighting
If your home is anything like mine, holiday lights are a must. But instead of using traditional bulbs that waste energy, we’ve switched to energy-efficient LED lights. They last up to 25 times longer and use up to 75% less electricity, which is great for the environment—and the energy bill!
Make Homemade Garlands
Every year, we make garlands from natural materials like dried orange slices and cranberries. It’s a fun family project that doesn’t involve plastic or synthetic materials. I also love knowing that these decorations will break down naturally when we’re done with them.
Wrap Gifts in Reusable Fabric
Gift wrapping is one of those holiday traditions that can generate a lot of waste. That’s why I’ve started choosing reusable fabric over traditional wrapping paper. My daughter even gets in on the action, learning how to wrap gifts using Furoshiki—a beautiful, sustainable Japanese fabric-wrapping technique.
Thrift Your Ornament
My family loves hunting for secondhand treasures. Thrifting for ornaments has become a tradition in our home, and it’s a great way to find unique, pre-loved items that don’t contribute to the holiday waste we try so hard to avoid. Encourage your kids to pick their favorites, and you’ll save money in the process.
Choose a Living Tree
Do you keep a tree in your house over the holiday season? One of the most meaningful practices I’ve come across is using a living, potted tree instead of a cut one. We love the idea of planting it outside after the holidays and watching it grow. This practice is a beautiful way to give back to the earth—and to create a lasting memory.

Craft Decorations from
Recycled Paper
We love crafting as a family, and this year we plan to make snowflakes and stars from recycled paper.
Preparing homemade decorations is a fun, eco-friendly way to reduce waste. The cool thing here is that we don’t need to sacrifice the beautiful, handmade decor we so enjoy over the holiday season.
As we celebrate the season, I encourage you to join Sky Organics in making sustainable decor a permanent part of your family’s holiday traditions. Every choice we make—from the decorations we use
to the gifts we wrap—has the potential to leave a positive impact, not only for us but for future generations.
So let’s show our kids that protecting the environment is just as important as celebrating the holidays we so love. Let’s create a season that’s as magical for our loved ones as it is sustainable for the planet. Because when we choose sustainability, we’re doing so much more than just protecting the earth. We’re teaching our kids to care for the world around them—and carry the tradition forward for generations to come.
